Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen in 1902 and studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He became one of the most influential figures of Danish Modernism, working from buildings down to the smallest details.
Jacobsen is renowned for designing total environments. For the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, completed in 1960, he designed the building, the interiors, the furniture, the lighting and even the cutlery; the Egg and Swan chairs and the AJ lamp were created for it. His stackable Ant chair of 1952 and Series 7 chair of 1955, made by Fritz Hansen, are among the best-selling chairs of all time. Other enduring designs include the Grand Prix chair, the Cylinda-Line stainless-steel tableware for Stelton and the Bellevue lamp. His architecture includes St Catherine’s College in Oxford and Aarhus City Hall.
Jacobsen died in 1971. His designs remain in production, and his integrated approach to architecture and design is still studied around the world.
